Tour Overview: Shira Route
The Shira Route is a challenging path on Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning at the Shira Gate in the west. A unique aspect of this route is that climbers are transported by an off-road vehicle to the Shira Gate, located at 11,500 feet, bypassing the initial hike through the lush rainforest ecological zone. This means trekkers start at a high altitude, which can pose acclimatization challenges for those who spent the previous night in Moshi.
The trek showcases the stunning beauty of the Shira Plateau and connects with the Machame Route, offering breathtaking viewpoints along the southern circuit. While the Shira Route experiences lower foot traffic initially, it becomes busier once it merges with Machame.
This route is ideal for those confident in their acclimatization abilities and comfortable with longer, steeper hikes.
