This relatively new route can be completed in six days (five nights) but is ideally taken over eight days (seven nights) for better acclimatization. Starting at Londorossi Gate, the trek passes through lush rainforest and the Shira Plateau, circling the southern circuit for breathtaking views. The ascent to the summit is from the east, with descent via the Mweka trail.

Lemosho Route Itinerary: Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 1: Lemosho Glades (2385m) to Big Tree Camp (2780m)
You’ll start your adventure with a pick-up from your hotel, followed by a transfer to the Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing the registration process, the climb begins as you steadily ascend through the lush forests of the Lemosho glades. Your destination for the night is Big Tree Camp, where you’ll settle in after a rewarding day of trekking. The distance covered today is approximately 7 km (4.3 miles), taking around 4 hours. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2780m) to Shira 2 Camp (3500m)
On the second day, you’ll trek across a picturesque plateau of grassy moorland, dotted with volcanic rock formations and heather. Your destination is Shira 2 Camp, where stunning views of Kibo Peak often greet you. Expect to gain altitude as parts of the route can be steep. This trek covers around 16 km (10.3 miles) and will take approximately 9 to 11 hours.
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3500m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Your journey continues with an ascent that offers panoramic views, leading you into the upland desert zone. You’ll walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach, reaching the iconic Lava Tower at 4640m—ideal for a lunch break. After lunch, a steep descent takes you to Barranco Camp, located at 3960m and sheltered by towering cliffs. This day involves around 10 km (6.2 miles) of trekking and will take about 7 hours. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Day four begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. You’ll then tackle the ascent of the Great Barranco Wall, which offers stunning views and a challenging yet non-technical climb. After passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, you’ll head towards the Karanga Valley. A steep climb from the valley will lead you to your night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. If you’re feeling strong, there’s an optional mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp. Expect to cover about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) in approximately 5 hours. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (3963m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off for Barafu Camp, situated at 4640m. The journey across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation is challenging, and the altitude adds to the difficulty. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you’ll have the afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit ascent ahead. Stay hydrated and warm as you enjoy an early dinner and attempt to get some sleep before your midnight departure. The distance covered today is around 3 km (1.9 miles), taking about 3 hours.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4640m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
Beginning at midnight, you’ll embark on the ascent to Uhuru Peak, navigating steep slopes and scree for 4 to 5 hours. The spectacular views will accompany you as you climb toward the summit glaciers. You should reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) just as the first rays of sunlight break. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, you’ll continue for another hour to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5895m. Following your achievement, you’ll descend to Barafu Camp for breakfast before heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest. This day covers approximately 13.4 km (8.3 miles) and will take 12 to 15 hours. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1630m)
The final day features a gentle trek down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll complete park formalities and receive your climbing certificates—a proud moment to commemorate your achievement! Afterward, you’ll be met by vehicles for the return to your hotel in Moshi, where you can celebrate your incredible journey. The distance covered is about 12.1 km (7.5 miles), taking around 6 hours. Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch.
